For 2012 Triumph has announced plans to release a new Steve McQueen Edition based on the Triumph Trophy TR6 that the King of Cool rode to fame in 1963’s The Great Escape, made to look like a WWII-era BMW. Based on the iconic Bonneville T100 it will be limited to just 1,100 numbered examples identified by a plaque on the bar clamps. Complete with an army style matte green lacquer finish and stenciled logo, the Steve McQueen Edition also features a solo seat and luggage rack, skid plate and various blacked-out components.
It also features a facsimile of McQueen’s signature. Owners will also receive a certificate of authenticity. More details on the bike are expected to be released at the EICMA trade show in Milan on November 8, and it’s expected to go on sale next summer. McQueen was a longtime Triumph fan in real life as well. He bought a Triumph Bonneville from good pal Bud Ekins and raced it around the Hollywood Hills. He then invited Ekins to Germany to build the bikes for The Great Escape, for which McQueen did much of the stunt riding himself.
